Home catering brings the food to where you are: your living room, the garden, the office meeting room. There are three formats, and they make a big difference to how much work is left to you.
The more service you ask for, the more space and set-up time you need. For a seated dinner for a few guests, cooked in front of you, there is also the private chef format, which has its own page in this guide.
An example: for a birthday with 30 guests in an apartment in Monteverde, delivery with one member of staff on the buffet leaves you free to be with your guests without turning the kitchen into a workshop. For a family lunch with 8 people seated, on the other hand, delivery of dishes to reheat may be enough.
Before asking for a quote, walk round your home with three questions.
Where the buffet goes. Guides to buffet receptions suggest about three metres of table for every twenty guests: in many Rome apartments that means two tables in different rooms, or moving the buffet onto the terrace.
Where the caterer works. Clear worktops, a nearly empty fridge for drinks and cold dishes, the oven if anything needs reheating. Many caterers bring chafing dishes and portable fridges: ask what they bring, so you know what to clear.
How much power you have. Ovens, hot plates and coffee machines running at the same time can trip your home's electricity meter. Check the capacity on your bill and pass it on to the caterer.
For a private party at home you don't usually need a permit from the city. The building rules still apply (entrance hall, courtyard, lift, quiet hours), as does the ordinary noise tolerance set out in article 844 of the Italian Civil Code. Telling the neighbours and setting a time for the music to stop almost always avoids problems.
Tell the caterer if the lift is small or missing, or if there is a courtyard to cross with trolleys: more carrying by hand means more time and sometimes more staff.
If you live in the historic centre, in Trastevere, San Lorenzo or another restricted traffic zone, the caterer's van must respect the times and permits of the ZTL (the restricted traffic zone). The current times are on the city's official mobility website: give the exact address and ask who will handle access. Even outside the ZTL, in many neighbourhoods the problem is parking for unloading: say whether there is a driveway or a courtyard.
For a working lunch, a coffee break or a toast at the office, timings matter more than the menu. Say what time everything must be ready, how long the break lasts and where trays and drinks can go without taking over the desks. Ask for single portions if people will eat standing up or between meetings.
If some colleagues are vegetarian, have coeliac disease or don't eat pork, gather the requirements beforehand and pass them on to the caterer with exact numbers: it is easier than a generic tray that suits nobody.
In buildings with a concierge or access control, send the names and the van's number plate in advance. For more structured corporate formats, see the page on corporate catering and the guide to business lunches in Rome.
There is no fixed price, and we don't give one here: each caterer works it out from its own items. The quote depends on the number of guests, the menu, the format (delivery only or with staff), staff hours, hire of plates and glasses, distance and access. Delivery without staff is generally the most affordable format because you don't pay for service hours. For an item-by-item comparison, read how to read a catering quote.
Once your space and numbers are clear, request up to 3 quotes in a single request. For more detail, there is the full guide to home catering in Rome.
You can choose between delivery of ready trays only, delivery with staff who set up and clear away, or cooking and service at home. The more service you ask for, the more space and set-up time you need.
For a private party at home, usually not. The building rules apply, as does the ordinary noise tolerance set out in article 844 of the Italian Civil Code: tell the building manager if you use shared spaces.
It must respect the times and permits of the City of Rome's ZTL, which you can check on the city's official mobility website. Give the exact address and ask the caterer how it handles access and whether there is a supplement.
It depends on the caterer and the format: some include them, others hire them separately or deliver disposables. Have it written in the quote.
Yes, for working lunches, coffee breaks and toasts. Give the time, the length of the break and the building's access rules, and ask for single portions if people will eat standing.
