How to choose a vegan or vegetarian caterer in Rome
First, be clear about what you need. A vegetarian menu excludes meat and fish but may use dairy and eggs; a vegan menu excludes all animal products, including butter, honey and some hidden ingredients such as gelatine or rennet. Then decide whether the whole event will be vegan or vegetarian, or whether you only need some alternative courses for some of the guests.
For an entirely vegan event, choose a caterer that does it regularly, not one that simply removes the meat from its standard menu. Ask for a complete menu, with first courses, mains and desserts designed from scratch, and a tasting if the event is important. Every cuisine has traditional plant-based dishes, from Mediterranean to Middle Eastern and Asian, and Roman cooking too, from artichokes to chicory: a good caterer knows how to make the most of them.
How much does vegan catering cost in Rome
A vegan or vegetarian menu does not necessarily cost less than a traditional one. The price depends on ingredients (organic produce, plant-based cheeses, seasonal ingredients), preparation, service and drinks, as with any caterer. Ask several suppliers for the same type of menu to compare, and read the guide how much catering costs in Rome.
Truly vegan: ingredients and kitchen
Ask for the full list of ingredients in every dish, including stocks, doughs, sauces and desserts, where animal products hide most often. Check that wine and drinks are compatible, if that matters to you. If some guests also have allergies, remember that vegan does not mean allergen-free: nuts, soya and gluten are widely used in plant-based cooking. For guests with coeliac disease, see gluten-free catering and the guide to special diets.
If the event is mixed, with vegan and non-vegan guests, a good solution is a fully plant-based menu designed to appeal to everyone, with Mediterranean, international or traditional Roman dishes. That way you avoid double preparation, reduce waste and nobody feels like the guest with the different plate. Ask the caterer for a proposal along these lines and taste it first.
What to ask before you sign
Have it written in the quote that the menu is vegan or vegetarian and what that means for that caterer. Ask for the allergen list for each dish, how they keep preparations separate if the rest of the event is not vegan, and whether the alternative courses have the same number of dishes as the main menu. Then request up to 3 quotes.
