A rinfresco is a small standing reception, usually after a ceremony or an official moment: the christening at the parish church, the thesis defence, the signing of a contract, a colleague's retirement. People eat with their fingers or a fork, raise a glass, and after an hour or two they leave.
That is exactly the difference from a lunch or dinner: the rinfresco goes with the event, it does not replace it. If, however, it falls at lunchtime and guests will not eat anything else, it should be planned as a meal, with larger quantities and at least one hot dish. For a fuller format, with pasta and main courses, read the guide on the cost of a birthday buffet or see the page on finger food.
Christenings, first communions and confirmations. In Rome these ceremonies are concentrated between April and June, often late on Sunday morning. If the rinfresco follows the 11 or 12 o'clock Mass, guests arrive hungry: it is worth treating it as a lunch. You will find the details on the pages on christening catering and communion and confirmation catering.
Graduations. Sessions at Sapienza, Tor Vergata and Roma Tre are concentrated in a few days, and the exact date is often known late. Ask the caterer how much notice it needs and whether it can confirm a few weeks ahead. For the party itself, there is the page on graduation catering.
The office. Openings, presentations, Christmas greetings: here precise timings matter, and trays that are easy to pick from between conversations.
The classic rinfresco mixes savoury and sweet. On the savoury side, there are always mini pizzas, tramezzini (soft crustless sandwiches), savoury pastries, pizza al taglio and mini rolls, and in Rome often supplì (fried rice balls) and pizza bianca (plain white pizza) too. On the sweet side, small pastries, tarts, ciambellone (a ring cake) and, in many Roman families, mini maritozzi (sweet buns filled with whipped cream).
A practical rule: savoury first, sweet after the cake or the toast. If there is a ceremony cake, cut back on the other pastries, or a lot will be left over. Remember alcohol-free drinks for children and drivers too.
Quantities depend on the time of day. CateringRoma.it's guide to the christening rinfresco gives two practical reference points:
Add a margin of 10-15% for guests who turn up unannounced. These are indicative figures: a supplì is more filling than a canapé, so ask the caterer how big the pieces are. The full calculation is in the guide on food quantities for a buffet.
Many Rome parishes have a hall that can be used after the ceremony: ask the parish priest whether it is available and whether there are rules on times and cleaning. At home you need space for the table and an empty fridge; you will find the details in the guide to home catering in Rome.
In spring, when the weather is good, many families choose the garden or the terrace. Keep a covered plan B and some shade for cream desserts, which don't last long in the May sun. A restaurant or a privately booked room takes set-up and cleaning off your hands, but needs booking earlier.
We don't publish an average price: each caterer builds it from its own items. What counts is the number of pieces per person, drinks, the cake, delivery and above all the staff. A rinfresco delivered on trays costs less than one with waiters, set-up and hire. Ask several caterers for the same menu for the same number of guests, so the quotes can be compared. The overall picture is in the guide how much catering costs in Rome.
Once you have the date, the place and the number of guests, request up to 3 quotes.
A *rinfresco* is a short standing reception that goes with a ceremony. A buffet can be a full meal with pasta and main courses. If the *rinfresco* falls at lunchtime, it should be planned as a buffet.
As an indicative reference, about 4-6 pieces if the *rinfresco* comes before or after a meal, at least 12 if it replaces one. Add a 10-15% margin and ask the caterer how big the pieces are.
On the savoury side mini pizzas, *tramezzini*, savoury pastries, *pizza al taglio* and fried food such as *supplì*; on the sweet side small pastries, tarts and, for a Roman touch, mini *maritozzi*. Plan alcohol-free drinks for children and drivers.
Many parishes allow it. Ask the parish priest about availability, times and cleaning rules, then pass everything on to the caterer.
It depends on the caterer and the time of year. Since the session date is often known late, ask straight away how much notice is needed and whether they can confirm a few weeks before the event.
