A christening is almost always a family celebration, with grandparents, small children and a newborn who shouldn't get overtired. So the first choice is between a rinfresco (a light buffet served after the ceremony) and a proper lunch. A sweet and savoury rinfresco lasts a couple of hours and is easy to organise at home; a seated lunch needs a hall or a large space and a more structured service.
Choose a caterer that has already done christenings and can work to tight timings: the church service may run later than planned and the guests all arrive together. Ask how they handle the wait and whether the buffet can be ready before you arrive.
The cost depends on the format (rinfresco or lunch), the number of courses, the drinks and the staff. A rinfresco delivered to your home costs less than a lunch served in a hall; the confettata (a display of sugared almonds), the cake and tableware hire may be included or extra. If the party is at home, the caterer needs to know how much space there is and whether they can use the kitchen. Keep a quiet room free for the baby and provide seating for older guests, even if the rinfresco is a standing one. Ask for a menu suited to young children and portions that are easy to eat. If the church is far from home or from the hall, work out how long guests will take to get there in Rome's Sunday traffic and tell the caterer. A buffet ready a few minutes early is better than guests waiting by empty tables. Ask, too, whether the caterer can keep dishes warm in case of an unexpected delay, and for how long.

Find out whether the cake and confettata are included, whether you can bring them from outside, and whether there are charges for waiters or hire.
