A food truck brings kitchen and service in a single vehicle: an Ape (the small three-wheeled Italian van), a van or a cart that cooks on site. It works well at informal weddings, garden parties, corporate events and team building, on its own or alongside the main caterer for the late evening. Before choosing, look at what it serves: supplì (fried rice balls) and other fried food, sandwiches, burgers, tacos, pizza, ice cream, coffee or cocktails. Several different food trucks make a small street food market.
Check that the vehicle can get where it needs to. Villas, gardens and estates have different entrances, slopes and ground: ask for the vehicle's dimensions and whether it needs flat, firm ground. In the historic centre, the ZTL (the restricted traffic zone) and narrow streets can make access difficult or impossible.
Many food trucks ask for a minimum number of guests or a minimum spend, because the vehicle and staff cost the same regardless of covers. The price then depends on menu, quantities per person, length of service and distance. Ask whether the price is per person or a flat fee and what happens if there are fewer guests than the minimum. For the other items, read the guide how much catering costs in Rome.
A food truck needs power: some have a generator, others ask for a socket with a certain capacity. Ask which they need and whether the generator is quiet, especially for a wedding. On private land, agreement with the owner is usually enough; on public land you need permits from the city council, which take time. For an evening in a villa with a food truck alongside the wedding lunch, see also wedding catering.
Finally, think about how guests will move around: a food truck in a hidden corner stays empty, one in front of the entrance creates queues. Choose a visible spot, lit in the evening and with some space in front for waiting. If you have several vehicles, put them close but not too close, so the queues don't overlap and every guest quickly finds what they are looking for.
Have the minimum number of guests, quantities per person, hours of service and the vehicle's footprint put in writing. Ask what kind of power is needed, who brings plates and napkins, who deals with rubbish and how they label allergens. Then request up to 3 quotes.
It depends on menu, guests and duration; many food trucks ask for a minimum number of guests or a minimum spend. Ask whether the price is per person or a flat fee.
On private land, agreement with the owner is usually enough. On public land you need permits from the City of Rome.
Almost always: some have their own generator, others ask for a socket with adequate capacity. Check with the venue first.
For an informal party, yes; at a wedding it usually works alongside the caterer, for the drinks reception or the late evening.
*Supplì* and other fried food, sandwiches and burgers, pizza, international food, ice cream, coffee and cocktails are the most common. You can combine several vehicles for a street food market.
