What a private chef is

A private chef comes to your home, uses your kitchen and prepares a dinner for a small group. They do the shopping, cook on site, plate up and usually leave the kitchen tidy. It is the right format for an anniversary, a dinner with friends, a birthday at the table, a marriage proposal or a small micro wedding.

The result is close to a restaurant dinner, but at home: no bookings, no closing times, nobody who has to drive to Trastevere and look for parking.

How it differs from catering

A caterer works mainly in its own kitchen: it prepares the dishes beforehand and brings them ready or to be reheated. A private chef cooks everything, or almost everything, in your home, in front of the guests if you like.

This leads to three practical differences.

  • Number of guests: a chef on their own works well with small groups seated at the table. For a bigger standing party, you need a caterer with a buffet: you will find how to organise it in the guide to home catering in Rome.
  • The kitchen: with a chef, your kitchen becomes a restaurant kitchen for a few hours. With a caterer, an oven and an empty fridge are often enough.
  • Table service: many chefs work alone or with one kitchen assistant. If you want someone to serve and clear, ask explicitly.

Some Rome caterers offer both formats, which is why you will find them on this page.

How it works, step by step

  1. First contact. You give the date, number of guests, area, type of cuisine and budget. Mention allergies, intolerances and diets straight away.
  2. The menu proposal. The chef proposes one or more menus, usually three or four courses. You can ask for changes.
  3. A visit or photos. Many ask for photos or a description of the kitchen: hob, oven, worktops, tableware.
  4. The evening of the dinner. The chef arrives a few hours before with the ingredients and some of the equipment, cooks, serves or plates up, and tidies.

One thing to decide beforehand: do you want the chef in view, explaining the dishes and cooking while the guests chat, or in the kitchen with the door closed? In homes with an open kitchen the first option comes naturally and becomes part of the evening. Tell the chef, because it changes how they organise the work.

What cuisine to ask for

Private chefs in Rome work in different styles: raw fish and seafood cooking from the coast, creative Italian cooking, plant-based menus, international or Asian cuisine, and Roman cooking done well too, with Roman-style or Jewish-style artichokes between February and April, cacio e pepe tossed to order, abbacchio (milk-fed lamb) in spring, puntarelle (chicory shoots) in winter. Ask the chef what they really work on and which ingredients they follow through the seasons. For ideas on produce, there is the guide to the seasonal menu; for Roman cooking, the one on the Roman cuisine menu.

What you need at home

  • a working hob and oven, with enough power to use them together;
  • clear worktops and a fridge with room for the shopping;
  • plates, glasses and cutlery for all the courses, or hire arranged by the chef;
  • a laid table, or someone to lay it.

If you live in a restricted traffic zone, give the address: the chef needs to know where to unload.

How much does a private chef cost

We don't give a price: each chef calculates it differently. Some charge a price per person with the shopping included, others separate their fee from the cost of the ingredients, which is paid separately. The wine can be yours or suggested by the chef. When you receive a quote, check what is included: shopping, table service, tableware hire, cleaning the kitchen, travel beyond the GRA (Rome's ring road).

What to ask before you book

  • Is the shopping included in the price or paid separately?
  • Do you work alone or with an assistant? Is there someone to serve at the table?
  • What do you need in the kitchen? Do you bring pans and tools?
  • What time do you arrive and what time do you expect to leave?
  • Do you leave the kitchen clean and take away the rubbish?

Once you have the date and the guests, request a quote or compare formats with the find a caterer tool.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a private chef and a caterer?

A caterer prepares dishes in its own kitchen and brings them ready or to be reheated. A private chef cooks in your home, usually for a small group seated at the table.

How many people can a private chef cook for?

It depends on the chef and your kitchen. On their own they work well with small groups at the table; for larger numbers, ask whether they bring help in the kitchen and at the table.

Is the shopping included in a private chef's price?

It depends: some chefs charge a price per person with the shopping included, others charge for the ingredients separately. Have it written in the quote.

Does a private chef also bring plates and pans?

Many bring their own knives and tools, while plates and glasses can be yours or hired. Ask what they bring and what they expect to find in your home.

Who cleans the kitchen after the dinner?

Many chefs leave the kitchen tidy at the end of the evening, but it is not a rule. Ask beforehand and check who takes away the rubbish too.
