How to choose a caterer for a first communion or confirmation in Rome
First communions and confirmations are concentrated on a few Sundays between April and June, often with many families from the same parish celebrating on the same day. So the first criterion is availability: as soon as the parish sets the date, contact caterers. The second is the type of party: a seated lunch for the family, a garden buffet with lots of children, or a mix, with standing drinks followed by lunch at the table.
At a first communion the most important guests are the children: ask for a dedicated menu and, if possible, entertainment or a separate space. At a confirmation the young people are older and the menu can be the same for everyone.
How much does communion and confirmation catering cost in Rome
The price depends on format, number of courses, drinks, staff and hire. The children's menu usually costs less than the adults'; the cake and the confettata (a display of sugared almonds) may or may not be included. Sundays in May are the most in demand, and some caterers have different terms for those dates. Give everyone the same number of adults and children to compare, and read the guide how much catering costs in Rome.
The season: what to know
With many parties on the same day, caterers run several services in parallel. Ask who will be in charge of your party and how many waiters will be dedicated to you. In May and June it can already be hot in Rome: an outdoor lunch needs shade, plenty of cold water and a menu that can stand the temperature. Plan for spring rain too.
If several families from the same class are celebrating together, consider a joint party: sharing the hall and the caterer can lower the cost per person and simplify logistics. In that case, agree beforehand who signs the contract, who pays the deposit and how costs are split if a family changes its mind or the guest numbers change at the last minute.
What to ask before you sign
Ask for the full menu for adults and children with quantities, the allergen list and the terms if the number of guests changes. Ask whether the cake, confettata and drinks are included and until what time the service lasts. Check the deposit and penalties. Once you have the date, request up to 3 quotes.
