Menu tasting

Tasting the menu before the event to decide dishes, portions and service. Ask first whether it costs and whether it comes off the total.

The menu tasting (in Italian, degustazione or prova menu) is the meeting where you taste the caterer's proposed dishes before signing or finalising the menu. It is for deciding, not celebrating: better to go with few people and a list of questions.

Beyond taste, look at portions, temperature, plating and service. It is the right moment to see plates, glasses and tablecloths in person, to try the pasta dishes your guests will judge the dinner by and, if needed, the vegan or gluten-free courses. With an exclusive caterer it is often part of the venue visit.

What to ask

Before booking it, ask what it costs, how many people it includes and whether it comes off the total if you sign. Leave with a written menu and the agreed changes, to attach to the contract. The guide to the menu tasting has the full list; to choose the supplier see how to choose a caterer.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tasting free?

It depends on the caterer: some offer it, others charge for it and deduct it from the total if you sign. Ask beforehand.

How many people should come to the tasting?

Few: whoever decides and at most one or two trusted people. With more, it is hard to judge.
