Banquet manager

The banqueting company's person in charge of your event: turns requests into menu and running order, and keeps time on the day.

The banquet manager is the person who looks after your event on behalf of the banqueting company. They gather your requests and turn them into a menu, a running order and a work plan; they coordinate with the venue, wedding planner, musicians and photographer.

On the day they decide when each course goes out and handle the unexpected: a ceremony running late, rain, an allergy nobody mentioned. At small events the role may be combined with that of the maître, who directs the waiters in the room. They are sometimes also called event manager or head of events.

What to ask

This is the person to meet before anyone else. Ask their name, whether you will meet before the event and whether they will be there from the guests' arrival to the end of service. The table plan and service routes are decided with them. The roles in the team are explained in the guide to banqueting staff roles.

Frequently asked questions

Are a banquet manager and a wedding planner the same thing?

No. The banquet manager works for the caterer and coordinates the banquet; the wedding planner works for the couple and coordinates all the suppliers.

Do I need one for a small event too?

You always need someone keeping time. At small events the maître often acts as the person in charge as well.
